Thantha vibe

തന്ത വൈബ് (manglish: Thantha vibe) is a term used to attribute persons who acts like that annoying uncle. The uncles who criticize the new trends of younger generation, picks on the tiniest of things.

The term can have different levels of seriousness depending on the context. The word "thantha" means father, though it has a negative connotation and is not normally used in conversations.

Examples

Person 1: Let's go party in the club at 11 PM

Person 2: poyi kidannu urangaan nokkadaa (go and sleep bro)

Person 1: enthuvaadaa, neeyum thantha vibe aayo? (what bro, have you also become thantha vibe?)

Female version of the word also exists as തള്ള വൈബ് (manglish: Thalla vibe). "Thalla" means mother with negative connotation just like "thantha".

Origins

The term got popular through a reel video of Instagram account saafboi.[1] According to them, the term was used between their elder brothers to ridicule each other.

Popularity

The term was selected as the Malayalam word of the year 2024 by Malayala Manorama newspaper.[1]
