What happened in Poland?
Poland was under the influence of Soviet Union ever since 1947 after the Red Army's takeover of Polish territory from German occupation in World War II. Communist control was strengthened through electoral fraud in the 1946 Polish people's referendum and the 1947 Polish parliamentary election. The Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) became the dominant political faction under a one-party state.[1] Read more on Wikipedia: Polish People's Republic
In the 1980s, Solidarity was a broad anti-authoritarian social movement, using methods of civil resistance to advance the causes of workers' rights and social change. The Government attempted in the early 1980s to destroy the union through the imposition of martial law in Poland and the use of political repressions.[2]
Lech Wałęsa became the leader of the Solidarity movement, and led a successful pro-democratic effort, which in 1989 ended Communist rule in Poland and ushered in the end of the Cold War. After winning the 1990 election, Wałęsa became the first democratically elected president of Poland since 1926 and the first-ever Polish president elected by popular vote.[3]
Both Lech Wałęsa and Solidarity is referenced by Prakash (Jayaram's character) in response to Prabhakaran's (Sreenivasan's character) "Don't utter a word about Poland!" dialogue.
Sandesam was released in 1991 just 1 year after Wałęsa was elected president. Wałęsa lost the subsequent elections of 1995 to Democratic Left Alliance leader Aleksander Kwaśniewski. Kwaśniewski was successful in enacting a new constitution for Poland and bringing in strong reforms which Wałęsa failed to do. Kwaśniewski still holds the title of the all time favorite Polish president.[4]
